I wanted the best of both worlds on this photography mission.

This week on Field Journal, we start the only logical way — by sending a message to any nearby extraterrestrials, then floating around Moffat Beach waiting for the big ball to crack the horizon. From there, it’s a hot coffee, a van door, a very questionable Stetson choice, and a trip out to Imbil State Forest with the Mamiya C330 loaded with black and white HP5. I spend the morning wandering through hooping pine trees, trying to remember how to look through a camera that shows the world backwards, falling in love with photography all over again, and proving once more that I am still an absolutely terrible fisherman. A quiet little episode about sunrise swims, film photography, summer heat, bad patience, and the simple joy of picking up a camera and going for a walk.

I ordered this Mamiya C330 from Japan and now I’m testing it in this steamy hot forest.
