A commercial photography job took us deep into Queensland coal country — photographing the workers, families, businesses and people who call these regional mining communities home. Over two days we travelled through Moranbah, Dysart and Mackay, chasing good light, photographing real people, changing plans on the fly and trying to create portraits that felt authentic, cinematic and honest. But between the actual campaign shots, I kept wandering off. Old petrol stations. Mining infrastructure. Dust. Empty roads. Industrial sheds. Strange roadside details. Little pieces of regional Australia that probably wouldn't make most people's road-trip itinerary, but somehow always seem to catch my attention. That's probably one of my favourite things about working as a commercial photographer. The camera gives me an excuse to visit places I otherwise might never see, meet people whose lives are completely different to mine, and come home feeling like I've learnt something. This is a behind-the-scenes look at a real commercial photography campaign in regional Queensland — the travel, location scouting, lighting, portrait photography, documentary photography and everything that happens between the actual photographs.
