Sometimes the best way to find a photograph is to stop looking for one. For this Field Journal I started around Kilcoy with a Mamiya C330, a roll of Kodak Gold 200 and a fairly loose idea of where I was heading. The plan — if you could call it one — was to take the long way home. Kilcoy. Jimna. Blackbutt. Nanango. Gympie. Imbil. And whatever looked interesting in between. That turned into empty back roads, old road signs, state forests, muddy tracks, waterfalls I didn't know existed, changing weather, a few questionable footwear decisions and one of those rare days where every little detour seems to reward you. That's probably what I love most about photographing regional Australia. When you don't know what's around the next corner, you're not trying to recreate a photograph you've already seen. You're just paying attention. Everything in this episode was photographed on Kodak Gold 200 with my Mamiya C330 medium-format film camera. No real itinerary. No checklist. Just a camera, a road and enough daylight to see where it went.
