This week I headed into Queensland’s Somerset region with a bike, a camera and the fairly simple goal of finding some classic Australian landscapes. The trip started on the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail — riding through dry country, little towns and big open landscapes while looking for those moments where the afternoon sun turns everything gold. Things didn’t exactly go to plan. The weather rolled in, my legs were cooked, my backside was considerably worse, and the grand sunset I’d imagined never really happened. So I called it, found somewhere to sleep and got up early the next morning to try again around Somerset Dam. That turned out to be a much better decision. This Field Journal is less about chasing one perfect photograph and more about wandering around long enough for the country to eventually show you something worth stopping for. Landscape photography, bike riding, Australian road trips, questionable food choices and another morning spent watching the sun come up.
