Some photography trips start with a shot list, a location scout and a fairly good idea of what you're trying to make. This wasn't one of them. I pointed the car down the Bunya Highway, started wandering through the little towns of inland Queensland and figured I'd stop whenever something looked interesting. Turns out that's not a terrible way to spend a day. There were road signs that looked better from the car than they did through the camera, places called Paradise that genuinely looked a little prehistoric, waterfalls, prickly pear, questionable decisions involving long grass and one moment where I demonstrated exactly how fearless I am around Australian wildlife. And then, completely out of nowhere, a helicopter gave me one of those photographs you could spend months trying to plan and still never get. Medium format film. Helicopter taking off. Right place, right time. The day finished with controlled burns glowing beside the road on the drive home — a pretty fitting end to a trip that really didn't have much of a beginning. No grand photography lesson in this one. Just a camera, some country roads and the reminder that sometimes the best thing you can do is head somewhere without knowing exactly what you're looking for.
